Annual Fish and Chip ride to Cleveleys

Alternative ride on 16th July 2026

Lancaster and South Lakes Cycle Touring Club

This was another fish and chip ride as an alternative to the hard ride planned. It also let those not available for the earlier one to indulge in the delights of Cleveleys and savour the delicious fish and chips. Hopefully this time we will make it, and enjoy the cruise on the way back.

Gathering at the Boot and Shoe were a small number of rebellious cyclists(some called them old and decrepit!). Leaving the Boot and Shoe for our coffee stop we went through the University, Galgate, Whams Lane, Hollins Lane then Cleveley Bank before descending through Scorton to Gubberforth Bridge and onto the rough narrow lane called Green Lane East before joining the main road to get to Garstang Arts and our coffee stop

After coffee we set off going down Croston Road to cross the A6 at the traffic lights. After Croston Barn Lane and Nateby Crossing Lane it was right onto Longmoor Lane then Skitham Lane. At the Tjunction we turned left onto Lancaster Road then right onto Crook Gate Lane finally ending up on Bull Park Lane and Shard Bridge. Once over the bridge we were in busy traffic but luckily we had a shared path/cycle lane to use. We then had to cross the main road(which was chaotic because of the new major road lay out). Once over at the junction I requested that the riders stayed behind me going through Poulton because of lane changes, the one way system and there were traffic lights to negotiate.

Safely through Poulton but again on busy roads we soon came to the main road leading to Cleveleys and the only difficulty was crossing the greasy tram tracks at the traffic lights. Once over it was plain sailing to the fish and chips. The fish and chips we had was called the small portions( it used to be called “pensioners portions” but the WOKE brigade probably objected to the term! however all of us would have qualified under the old name).

The afternoon was an easy ride. From fish and chips it was a maximum of an hour straight up the promenade dodging walkers and dogs before our cruise across the Wyre (as it was a short crossing there was no time to delve into the duty free shop!).

We left Knott End behind we used the sea wall to take us to Fluke Hall Lane so we bypassed Pilling. We used the busy A588 to get to the right turn onto Gulf Lane to avoid the fast traffic so we arrived safely in Cockerham.

We used to turn right here and go to Wallings but as the old railway line from Conder Green has been resurfaced the more pleasant way is a break in Glasson Dock(to enjoy the lovely smiles from the ladies on the cafe) then the railway line back to Aldcliffe and home.

A very hot sweaty 50 mile ride but very enjoyable. I think the company makes these rides very enjoyable, thanks every body for making it such a pleasant day out.
