Sunday Ride Report to Holgates, Silverdale on 1 February 2026
/CTC Ride Report Sunday 1st Feb. 2026
Ten members of Lancaster and South Lakes Cyclists Touring Club met at Nether Kellet for an early February excursion ‘awheel’ to Casterton Golf Club. Following an inspection of the leader’s new e-bike the company set off up the hill and on to Capernwray. Continuing up the Keer Valley, welcome signs of spring were noted, such as fields liberally dotted with lambs. A brief break was enjoyed near the top of the watershed to take in the expansive view of the valley before the sharp descent into the Lune catchment from Docker Park. A further sharp rise and descent brought us to Newton and thence via Whittington to our coffee stop at the Golf Club.
After brief discussions it seemed a waste of a middling day weather-wise to take the direct route back, so it was decided to partake of a lunch stop at Silverdale Holgates café. A few drops of rain fell on our way through Biggins and at Johnson House, but not enough to dampen spirits. Burton was soon reached after a fast and long descent, and thence to Arnside via the craggy woodlands to the west of the Wildlife Park.Hill climbing muscles were tested on the ascent of Briery Bank followed by the steady incline at the back of the village.
After a lengthy lunch break at the busy Holgates café, the slightly reduced party took to the lanes again for the homeward leg. An enjoyable 40-miler for the Lancaster contingent, and back home in time to watch TV sport.
New members will be made very welcome. Find out about our rides, social events and Club holidays at www.ctclancaster.org.uk
